A community outreach programme involving the Gujjar and Bakkarwal population was successfully conducted at Sarh in Mahore under the aegis of 58 Rashtriya Rifles. The meet aimed at recognizing the vital role played by these nomadic communities in the region, while also addressing their long-standing challenges and reaffirming the Indian Army’s commitment towards their welfare and development.

The event witnessed the presence of senior Army officials along with prominent dignitaries including Ch. Aijaz Ahmad Khan, former Minister of Revenue, J&K; Haji Mohammad Yousuf Majnu, President of the Gujjar Bakkarwal community, J&K; Mohammad Yaseen Poswal, General Secretary of the community; Akhlaq Choudhary, Administrator-cum-Executive Officer of J&K Waqf Board, District Reasi and BJP Scheduled Tribe Morcha Prabhari Reasi; Shafqat Majeed Bhat, SDM Mahore; and Parul Bhardwaj, SDPO Mahore. Several other respected members of the community and local administration also attended the programme.

During the interaction, speakers highlighted that the traditional migratory lifestyle of the Gujjar and Bakkarwal communities is not merely a cultural practice but plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance in the region. However, they also raised concerns over the persistent hardships faced by these communities, including limited access to education and healthcare, livelihood insecurities, seasonal displacement, and issues related to grazing land and mobility along traditional migratory routes.

Addressing these concerns, the Indian Army outlined various initiatives already underway to support the community. These include regular medical camps and healthcare outreach in remote areas, assistance in improving livelihood opportunities, and efforts to enhance communication facilities along difficult and isolated migratory paths. The Army reiterated its commitment to continue working closely with the community to address their needs and ensure inclusive development.

The Gujjar and Bakkarwal representatives appreciated the initiative taken by the Indian Army, describing it as a significant step towards bridging gaps and strengthening trust. They assured their continued cooperation and support, emphasizing the importance of such engagements in fostering mutual understanding and long-term progress in the region.
